In the early 22nd century, physicists developed a theory to do what no one at the time said could be done, travel faster than light. Under the theory, if a 4th dimensional space window could be located, physicists believed that it was possible to travel outside of the 3rd dimension at one point, into the 4th dimension and then back into the 3rd dimension at another point, at a speed faster than light.


NASA engineers designed the first unmanned space craft, Taurus A, to travel through a space window that had been located by a long range and very accurate telescope, in the direction of the Constellation Taurus. Taurus A crash landed into the Atlantic ocean after take-off from Cape Canaveral, when one of its rocket engines failed. An identical space craft, Taurus B, was later launched with the same mission. The space window was reached as estimated after a ten year journey. Images of the Constellation Taurus and the Hyades Star Cluster were received within one month after Taurus B entered the space window. NASA then knew that extremely fast interstellar space travel was possible.


Rocket engines for space craft had not improved that much since space missions of the 21st century and now with the discovery of the space window came the same problem of relatively slow interplanetary travel. NASA engineers then began to work on designs of engines in an effort to improve their speed. Although they did increase rocket velocity somewhat, the determination was made that an alternative fuel source had to be used to increase engine speed.


Physicists were called upon to experiment with dark energy to determine if it could be harnessed as a fuel source. Experiments were conducted and the results showed that dark energy, when a gravitational force was applied to it, created powerful negative pressure which would cause an object to be accelerated at great momentum. It then went back to the NASA engineers to create an engine that could use dark energy safely for a space craft.


The DE 22 rocket was first tested by NASA at White Sands Testing Facility in 2127 A.D. Although the engine proved to be far faster than any previous rocket engine, the rocket veered off the planned course. The navigational controls of a similar rocket were then adjusted and the engine was tested again but the same navigational problems existed. It was then determined that the issue was not with the navigation system of the rocket, instead it was the actual dark energy fuel cells which were causing the rocket to veer. Two years later this problem was corrected when the fuel cells were stabilized and the DE 23 rocket was launched with no navigational trouble. This was the answer that NASA design engineers wanted. The dark energy engine had increased the ability of a space craft to travel one Astronomical Unit (AU) by six times. This meant that travel from earth to mars, could be accomplished in just under eight days, on closest approach. It was also envisioned that with better space craft and engine designs these interplanetary speeds could be greatly increased.


NASA then launched Taurus C with a mission to explore the Hyades star cluster. Taurus C entered the star cluster the same way as Taurus B and moved near the star Theta Tauri. It discovered six planets orbiting Theta Tauri within close to one Astronomical Unit of each other. The first planet, although ten percent larger than earth and mostly covered in cloud, appeared to be capable of supporting life. NASA named the planet Harmonia. The other planets were then called Anteros, Ares, Athena and Dyonysus. All of these planets were composed of rock with atmospheres. One gas planet was discovered orbiting Theta Tauri, it was named Fortuna.


Taurus C launched a probe into Harmonia. It found that the atmosphere of was oxygen and that there were five continents with two oceans, large lakes and rivers comprised of water. No ice caps were seen, and the probe also found a varied terrain including desert, jungle, grass lands and forests. This seemed logical to scientists based upon the nature of the planet. Taurus C then moved to explore the other four rock planets with the primary interest being whether they were also oxygen planets with water. The probes indicated that all of the other planets were found to be capable of supporting human life, but they varied greatly in terms of overall temperature, terrain, oceans, lakes, rivers and the presence of ice caps. Taurus C also discovered that there were moons orbiting each of the planets, but NASA determined that a further mission would be required to explore these moons. When Taurus C made its final exploratory orbit around Harmonia it discovered a large moon orbiting the planet, covered with a thick atmosphere. Taurus C unexpectedly ceased transmission of its signal and images when it came near it. NASA named the moon Deimos 2.


News of Taurus C’s mission travelled quickly and there was much discussion about another mission to the planets of Theta Tauri, even a manned one. NASA then announced that it had no planned manned missions to Harmonia but that another Taurus mission could occur.


The Russian Federal Space Agency then stated that it had plans for an unmanned mission to each of the planets and was developing space craft to accomplish a manned mission by the year 2135. The European Space Agency also said that it had interest in unmanned space craft to launch probes as did the China National Space Administration, the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The media announced that a second space race was on and this created much interest in each space agency also sending manned missions to Harmonia. NASA then told the media that it too would launch a manned mission before 2135.


The issue of the second space race spurred debate in colleges and universities. The possibility of earth colonizing another planet became the subject of discussion. One professor of political science at Oxford University, Robert Smythe, Ph.D., wrote a paper entitled “The Colonization of the Constellations”. Smythe, a supporter of the British monarchy, said that if other planets were colonized, including Harmonia, it should be done under an empire system of government where an emperor was elected in each of the empires by colonists, with each empire then selecting which form of government it wanted. Smythe said that each of the empires would peacefully control their planets and any others discovered at the time and into the future. Smythe was also an avid card player and indicated that the empires be divided up according to the suits of playing cards, spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds. The paper became popular, as a sound way to govern any future colony, with a view to lasting peace and cooperation.
